 | | Toluca Brand: Authentic Spur RowelsMerriam Webster defines a rowel as "a revolving disk with sharp marginal points at the end of a spur". Cowboys, bronco riders, cattle drivers – you name it, they’ll have rowels on the ends of their spurs.
Spurs have been a working piece of equipment for the horseman, dating back to 700 B.C. Rowels, first measured to be about six to 10 inches in diameter, were most likely introduced to the spur in France or Spain in the 10th Century A.D. The Spanish conquistadors are thought to be responsible for introducing their style of spurs to the Americas in the early 1500s, a style which would greatly influence the cowboy spur we know today. Artisans in Mexico, who hand-made the spurs, found a new market in the United States and took their craftsmanship northward. In the 1800s cowboys began to make their own spurs, which had become one of the most prized pieces of a cowboy’s equipment. Today, spurs are highly collectable items of western memorabilia.
Toluca Brand has taken the definition of a rowel a little further and transformed them into beautiful necklace pendants. Toluca Brand showcases, not only jewelry, but also the spirit and intrigue of the cowboy life and the Wild West.
